Moving a couch without a truck sounds harder than it is. A 5x8 utility trailer and one helper is all you need.
What you'll need
- A vehicle with a 2-inch trailer hitch
- A 5x8 open utility trailer
- Two ratchet straps
- Moving blankets
- One other person to help lift
Step 1: Measure your couch
Before anything else, measure the length at its longest point. Under 96 inches fits flat. Longer — stand it on end or disassemble.
Step 2: Protect the couch
Wrap in moving blankets before it leaves the building. Fabric couches scratch easily on trailer edges.
Step 3: Get it out of the building
- Stand the couch on one end (back down, feet up) to get through doorways.
- At doorframe angles, rotate slightly — you're clearing the diagonal.
- Use furniture sliders on smooth floors — dramatically reduces effort.
- On stairs: one person above guiding, one below bearing weight.
Step 4: Load into the trailer
Back the trailer as close to the exit as possible. Slide the couch in on its side, then lay it flat. Two-person job — one inside guiding, one pushing from outside.
Step 5: Strap it down
Thread ratchet straps through the D-rings and over the couch. At least two straps. The couch should not shift when you rock the trailer by hand.
How long does this take?
Door-to-door: 45–90 minutes total. A 2-hour trailer rental covers it comfortably.
